SUBJECT:                     Budget Resolution for Court Services Unit Vehicles Purchase

 

RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):

TITLE

Adopt Budget Resolution increasing FY 2016-17 appropriations and estimated revenues for the Sheriff-Coroner Org 3111 in the amount $184,000 to purchase and up-fit four marked patrol vehicles for the Sheriff-Coroner’s Court Services Unit (4/5 vote).

REPORT

There is no additional Net County Cost associated with the recommended action. The Sheriff-Coroner’s Office will use prior years reserved funding from the AB 118 Trial Court Security allocation to purchase four Ford Explorer Police Interceptors ($112,000) to include up-fitting of law enforcement radio/computer and equipment provided by Cook’s Communication ($18,000 for each vehicle).

 

ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):

 

If the recommended action is not approved by your Board, the Department will not be able to purchase the requested vehicles, which will result in the Department’s continued use of existing vehicles that are high mileage vehicles with excessive maintenance and repair costs associated with their continued utilization.

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

 

There is no additional Net County Cost associated with the recommended action as all the costs associated with these vehicles will be funded with prior years reserved funds from the AB 118 Trial Court Security allocation. The approval of the recommended action will increase FY 2016-17 appropriations and estimated revenues in the amount of $184,000 for the purchase and up-fitting of four Ford Explorer Police Interceptor vehicles within Sheriff-Coroner Org 3111. Maintenance costs are included in the FY 2016-17 adopted budget for Org 3111.

 

DISCUSSION:

 

Historically, vehicles assigned to the Court Services Unit Sergeants are utilized to transport Jurors and other Court personnel to off-site crime scenes during jury trials. In addition, these vehicles are utilized for other Court related transportations as well as used by Sergeants when assigned collateral duties.

 

The current vehicles are previously utilized patrol vehicles with high mileage and increasingly excessive maintenance and repair costs. The approval of the recommended action will allow for replacement of high mileage vehicles with four Ford Explorer Police Interceptor vehicles within Sheriff-Coroner Org 3111.
