SUBMITTED BY:                     Nathan Magsig, Supervisor, District 5

SUBJECT:                     Approve Community Outreach Expenditure

RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):

TITLE

Approve community outreach expenditure of $2,000 to sponsor Shaver Lake Fireworks event, per Administrative Policy No. 75.

REPORT

Approval of this item is for the expenditure of $2,000 to assist the Shaver Lake Civic League’s (Civic League) annual Shaver Lake Fireworks event. This item was approved by County Counsel as an appropriate expenditure as outlined in Administrative Policy No. 75.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):

Your board can choose not to authorize District 5’s sponsorship of the event.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no increase in net county cost associated with the recommended action. Sufficient appropriations are included in the proposed budget for the FY 2023-24 within the Board of Supervisors Org 0110.

DISCUSSION:

The Civic League currently operates and maintain all vehicles, equipment, and facilities connected with providing structural fire protection and recreational facility services to County Service Area 31 (CSA 31), Shaver Lake. CSA 31 was formed in 1978 and contracted with the Civic League to provide fire protection and recreational facility services to the Shaver Lake Community.

The Civic League annually hosts a Shaver Lake Fireworks event for the community at no cost for admission. The Shaver Lake Fireworks event has been a tradition for the community of Shaver Lake and its visitors for 24 years.

On Saturday, July 6, 2024, the annual Shaver Lake Fireworks event over Shaver Lake will take place. There is a need for extra restroom facilities to accommodate the large crowd of visitors.

On August 8, 2017, your Board approved Administrative Policy No. 75 to allow individual Supervisors to expend portions of their individual budgets for community outreach services and programs. This expenditure to donate $2,000 to the Shaver Lake Fireworks event, hosted by the Civic League, was sent to County Counsel for review and approval. County Counsel deemed it an appropriate expenditure under the administrative Policy No. 75 guidelines.
