SUBJECT:                     Receive presentation from Department of Public Health on Future of Public Health funding updates

RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):

TITLE

Receive presentation from Department of Public Health on Future of Public Health funding updates.

REPORT

There is no Net County Cost associated with the recommended action.  Approval of the recommended action will allow the Department of Public Health (Department) to present your Board with updates on the state of the County’s public health, as required by the Future of Public Health (FoPH) funding.  This information will include data on morbidity and mortality, health gaps, and updates on some health related projects.  The item is countywide.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):

Should your Board not approve the recommended action, the Department will need to find another method to present the required annual updates to the Board in order to comply with the requirements of FoPH funding accepted by the Board on October 10, 2023.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no Net County Cost associated with the recommended action.  Approving the recommended action will indicate County has met the requirements of FoPH funding.

DISCUSSION:

The County currently receives $6,011,982 of FoPH funding annually from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to strengthen local public health workforce and infrastructure.  The non-competitive annual allocation supports hiring and retention of permanent staff, training, facility upgrades, equipment, and other related administrative costs.

As a recipient of FoPH funding, the Department must annually present updates to the Board on the state of the County’s public health.  While the method for presenting the updates is up to each county’s discretion, the presentation must identify the County’s:

                     Most prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality

                     Cases of morbidity and mortality with the most rapid three-year growth rate

                     Health gaps

The presentation must also provide an update on the progress of some health related projects identified in the County’s triennial FoPH Work Plan and identify policy recommendations for addressing these issues.

The Department has included this information in a brief PowerPoint presentation along with its most recent Leading Causes of Death report and Morbidity and Mortality Summary.
