DISCUSSION:
Agriculture has been the backbone of our county’s economy going back to its very beginning and labels for packaging our agricultural goods have been around since the 1880s. It is important for the community to be able to see visually the breadth of the County’s agricultural reach to provide a sense of just how big it is.
In the mid-2000s, the first set of fruit crate labels were donated and added to the Library’s Special Collections. In an effort to make them accessible to the public, the Library digitized 390 labels that were on hand and put them in the Library’s digital archives. In addition to digitizing them, the labels also are treated with de-acidification spray to preserve their present condition and are then stored in archival boxes to keep the light and dust away.
Adding this new collection will help continue to tell the story of Fresno County’s rich history. The donation of 500 fruit crate labels will be added to the Library’s Fruit Crate Label collection. The recommended action is required to satisfy the reporting requirements under AP Number 30 for donations greater than $7,500.00 in value.
