DATE: May 12, 2026
TO: Board of Supervisors
SUBMITTED BY: Steven E. White, Director
Department of Public Works and Planning
SUBJECT: 2025 Maintained Mileage of Fresno County Roads
RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):
TITLE
Adopt Resolution revising the number of miles of maintained Fresno County roads and direct the Director of the Department of Public Works and Planning or his designee to transmit a copy of the adopted Resolution to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
REPORT
Approval of the recommended action will certify the County’s maintained road mileage as of December 31, 2025, at 3,461.397 miles. This represents a decrease of approximately 4.749 miles from 2024. The resolution is required annually pursuant to California Streets and Highways Code, section 2121. Upon your Board’s adoption of the recommended resolution, the Department will submit it to Caltrans. This item is countywide.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):
There is no viable alternative action.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no Net County Cost associated with the recommended action. However, gas tax allocations to local agencies are formula based, and include local agencies’ weighted population and maintained mileage as primary factors. As a result of the reduction in the County’s roadway mileage, there will be a nominal decrease in Road funds that the County receives through future allocations.
DISCUSSION:
By May of each year, the State of California requires each County to certify, by resolution, the length of County maintained roads as of December 31st of the previous year. For the calendar year ending December 31, 2024, the maintained mileage in the County was approximately 3466.146 miles. For the calendar year ending December 31, 2025 the maintained mileage was approximately 3,461.397 miles. This reflects a net reduction of approximately 4.749 miles due to annexations by various cities, vacations, and other corrections. These changes are detailed in the resolution.
