RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):
TITLE
Approve community outreach expenditure of $1,000 to sponsor the Search and Rescue (SAR) Wild Run fundraising event, per Administrative Policy No. 75.
REPORT
Approval of this item is for the expenditure of $1,000 to assist the SAR non-profit volunteer's fundraising event. This item was approved by County Counsel as an appropriate expenditure as outlined in Administrative Policy No. 75.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):
Your board can choose not to authorize District 5's sponsorship of the event.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no increase in net county cost associated with the recommended action. Sufficient appropriations are included in the proposed budget for the FY 2023-24 within the Board of Supervisors Org 0110.
DISCUSSION:
The Fresno County Sheriff's SAR Mountaineering Team was formed as an auxiliary unit of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office in 1982. They are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization of diversified volunteers, formed to augment the Fresno County Sheriff's Office during search and rescue operations in Fresno County and throughout the state of California.
Team members are trained in various search and rescue disciplines including: orienteering, tracking, wilderness and winter survival, first-aid/CPR, swift water rescue, high/low angle rescue, helicopter safety, search techniques and search management. These skills facilitate their ability to respond to a variety of urban and wilderness emergencies.
Each team member is responsible for providing all of their personal equipment to be mission-ready. The cost of hiking apparel, boots, backpacks, sleeping systems, food, etc., is all donated by each member, typically costing ~$2,500 each.
