SUBJECT: Termination of the 2025 Garnet Fire Local Emergency Status in Fresno County
RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):
TITLE
Adopt Resolution terminating the local emergency status related to the 2025 Garnet Fire effective October 21, 2025, initially proclaimed by the Emergency Services Director on August 26, 2025, and ratified by the Board of Supervisors on August 29, 2025.
REPORT
Approval of the recommended action will terminate the 2025 Garnet Fire local emergency status in the County.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):
Your Board may opt to continue the local emergency until a date uncertain or act on an alternative termination date.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended action.
DISCUSSION:
On August 24, 2025, the Garnet Fire ignited in the Sierra National Forest area of the County and rapidly expanded, creating conditions of extreme peril to public safety and necessitating the proclamation of a local emergency by the Emergency Services Director on August 26, 2025, pursuant to Government Code section 8630 and Fresno County Ordinance Code, Chapter 2.44. The Board subsequently ratified this proclamation and adopted Resolution No. 25-267 on August 29, 2025.
Since that time, firefighting efforts have achieved full containment of the Garnet Fire, evacuations have been lifted, and emergency operations have been demobilized. Conditions no longer warrant the exercise of extraordinary emergency powers.
Approval of the recommended Resolution will officially terminate the local emergency declaration effective October 21, 2025, consistent with Government Code section 8630(d), which requires termination at the earliest possible date.
