SUBJECT:                     Revision to Salary Resolution Section 900 - Holidays

RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):

TITLE

Approve an amendment to Salary Resolution section 900 - Holidays to rename March 31 (Cesar Chavez’ Birthday) to March 31 (Fresno County Agriculture Appreciation Day), as reflected on Appendix “A”

REPORT

There is no change to the total year-over-year cost of the recommended action. Approval of the recommended action would retain the County paid holiday on March 31 and constitute a clerical renaming from its current designation as Cesar Chavez’ Birthday to instead be designated as Fresno County Agriculture Appreciation Day.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):

If your Board were not to approve the recommended action, the holiday would retain its current name.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no known fiscal impact resulting from taking the recommended action.

DISCUSSION:

Considering recent and disturbing allegations concerning César Chávez, the attached amendment to the County’s Salary Resolution, if approved, will rename the holiday currently observed by Fresno County every March 31st to “Fresno County Agriculture Appreciation Day.” This ensures the holiday continues to highlight the values and identity of our County.  As the number one agricultural producing county in California and the United States, agriculture remains central to the County’s economic strength, workforce identity, and cultural heritage. Renaming the holiday provides an opportunity to recognize the contributions of the countless individuals and families who sustain this vital industry and to celebrate the essential role agriculture plays in the well-being and prosperity of our community.
