DATE: May 26, 2020
TO: Board of Supervisors
SUBMITTED BY: Steven E. White, Director
Department of Public Works and Planning
SUBJECT: Maintained Mileage of Fresno County Roads
RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):
TITLE
Adopt Resolution revising the number of miles of maintained Fresno County roads.
REPORT
Approval of the recommended action will certify the County’s maintained road mileage as of December 31, 2019, at 3,485.42 miles. This represents a decrease of approximately 3.06 miles from 2018. The resolution is required annually pursuant to California Streets and Highways Code, section 2121. This item is countywide.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):
There is no viable alternative action.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no Net County Cost associated with the recommended action. However, transportation funds distributed by California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) are allocated to the various local agencies based on a formula, which includes the maintained mileage of the local agencies. As a result of the reduction in the County’s roadway mileage, there could be a minimal decrease in Road funds that the County receives from the State.
DISCUSSION:
By May of each year, the State of California requires each County to certify, by resolution, the length of County maintained roads as of December 31st of the previous year. For the calendar year ending December 31, 2018, the maintained mileage in the County was approximately 3,488.48 miles. For the calendar year ending December 31, 2019, the maintained mileage was approximately 3,485.42. This reflects a net reduction of approximately 3.06 miles due to annexations by various cities. These changes are detailed in the resolution.
Caltrans will incorporate the maintained mileage adjustment into future funding distributions upon receipt of the resolution approved by your Board.
