SUBJECT:                     Resolution Dissolving San Joaquin Valley Rail Committee

RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):

TITLE

Adopt Resolution dissolving the San Joaquin Valley Rail Committee.

REPORT

Approval of the recommended action allows for the elimination of the San Joaquin Valley Rail Committee (SJVR Committee).  Based on staff’s research, the need for the SJVR Committee no longer exists.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):

No viable options are available.  Should your Board not approve the recommended action, the SJVR Committee would still exist even though it is no longer active.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no increase in Net County Cost associated with the recommended action.

DISCUSSION:

In response to the Clerk to the Board’s request to verify the current status of all Boards, Commissions and Committees created by the Board of Supervisors, the Department of Public Works and Planning is recommending the Board consider and approve dissolution of the SJVR Committee.

The SJVR Committee was established on March 10, 1987, for the purpose of discussing and formulating plans, suggestions, and ideas for changes and improvements to passenger train service in the San Joaquin Rail Corridor and then pass generally agreed upon proposals to the State Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and Amtrak.  The SJVR Committee was active for many years following its creation, however, in 2013, the SJVR Committee transitioned to the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority (SJJPA) for the purpose of transiting the management of the Amtrak San Joaquin Rail Service from Caltrans to the SJJPA. The transfer of management was completed in 2015.  As a result, it recommended that this committee be dissolved.
