RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):

TITLE

Adopt Resolution to retroactively accept donations valued at $2,300 from staff at McCormick Barstow, LLP on behalf of In-Home Supportive Services recipients.

REPORT

Approval of the recommended action will allow the County to retroactively accept donated items, including canned goods, clothes, blankets and toiletries from McCormick Barstow, LLP in compliance with the County Administrative Office Management Directive 762 for accepting donations greater than $500.00 in value.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):

There is no viable alternative action.

RETROACTIVE AGREEMENT:

McCormick Barstow, LLP collects donations throughout the year and up to the December 14, 2016. DSS staff then distributes the items to IHSS Recipients on behalf of McCormick Barstow, LLP during the Christmas holiday. Because the value of the donation is not known until all items were collected on December 14, 2016, an agenda item to accept the donation and distribute the items by Christmas is unfeasible.  Once the value of the items was known, efforts were made to bring this item to your Board as soon as possible.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no increase in net County cost associated with the recommended action.

DISCUSSION:

For over 22 years, the County has received donations of canned goods, blankets and toiletries from McCormick Barstow, LLP staff on behalf of IHSS recipients that include the elderly, disabled and blind.  Originally known as the “Basket Project”, the project began as an effort to assist this population during the holidays through the provision of gift baskets consisting of personal care items.

The effort has continued and grown.  McCormick Barstow, LLP staff collects money and items throughout the year. Funds are raised through the collection and recycling of bottles and cans, in addition to office fundraisers with the proceeds going toward the donation.

A letter from McCormick Barstow, LLP values the 2016 donation provided at $2,300.  A Request of Acceptance of Donations has been submitted to the Auditor-Controller/Treasurer-Tax Collection.
