DISCUSSION:

The Special Investigations Division (SID) Narcotic Detection K-9 Program was established around 2000 with one Labrador retriever named Cowboy. Since the program’s inception, the Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has added dogs to the program. The department currently has three drug detection canines in service. The Sheriff-Coroner’s drug detection dogs have been involved in 526 Asset Forfeiture cases since the program began, resulting in the seizures of over $15,000,000 in currency. The Sheriff-Coroner’s Office currently uses the canines in many different capacities to help locate the presence of illicit drugs that could not otherwise be detected. These resources are available to our local, state and federal law enforcement agency partners on a regular basis.

Valley Crime Stoppers donated $10,000 to the Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office to purchase a canine. The canines are assigned to work various shifts throughout the County seven days a week and are available for calls 24 hours a day.
