SUBJECT: Zoo Authority 2016-17 Annual Report
RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):
TITLE
Receive the Fresno County Zoo Authority 2016-17 Annual Report.
REPORT
The Zoo Authority is required to provide an annual report to the Board per the requirements of Measure Z. This item is countywide.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended action.
DISCUSSION:
The annual report of the Fresno County Zoo Authority (Authority) covers fiscal year July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017, and includes the annual audit of Measure Z funds from Brown Armstrong Accountancy Corporation and received by the Authority at their November 29, 2017 meeting. The audit was issued with an unmodified or clean opinion.
As of June 30, 2017, $31,782,697 in Measure Z funds were held in trust for Fresno’s Chaffee Zoo Corporation (ZooCorp), with $25,781,171 of the total cash reserved for capital projects, and $6,001,526 for operations.
In FY 2016-17, $13,347,631 in Measure Z taxes were received in total, and the Authority reimbursed the ZooCorp $130,686 for capital projects, including development of Wilderness Falls Water Play Area and utility improvements. The Authority also reimbursed ZooCorp $4,443,979 for operations costs that directly serve the animals, including feed, keeper and veterinarian salaries, and utilities. Dollar amounts vary slightly between the annual report and the auditor’s report as the annual report was prepared ahead of receiving the auditor’s final report.
