REPORT

There is no Net County Cost associated with the recommended actions. The first recommended action is required to satisfy the reporting requirements under Chapter 762.12 of the CAO Management Directives for donations greater than $7,500 in value. Approval of the recommended actions will allow the Fresno County Public Library to accept the donation of $8,000 to purchase children books, along with a non-monetary gift of donated children books valued at $650 for a total value of $8,650 from current National Basketball Association (NBA) player Robin Lopez. The books are to be given to participants of the Library’s 2018 Summer Challenge and Lunch at the Library programs and will be distributed to all Library branches to be handed out as prizes after July 10, 2018. The impact of the donation will be countywide.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):

Your Board may choose to not accept the donation, which will result in not handing out free books to children who participate in this year’s Summer Challenge and Lunch at the Library programs.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no Net County Cost associated with the recommended actions. Approval of the second recommended action will increase the FY 2018-19 appropriations and estimated revenues for the County Library Book Fund Org 7521 in the amount of $8,000 to purchase children books that will be distributed during the Summer Challenge programs.

DISCUSSION:

Robin Lopez, who grew up in Fresno and graduated from San Joaquin Memorial High School, went on to play college basketball at Stanford University and eventually the NBA.  Robin comes from a family of readers, and wants to share that love of reading with others.  His great grandmother was a librarian.  His grandmother, Inky Ledford, was a teacher for many years, teaching in Fresno Unified School District.  Inky had a bedroom in her house that she converted into a library full of children’s books.  Growing up, Robin, his twin brother Brook and siblings would spend many hours in their grandmother’s home library reading.  With the love of reading entrenched in his heart, Robin has been an avid supporter of literacy.  He has supported reading programs wherever he can.

The monetary donation of $8,000 to purchase children’s books and the non-monetary gift of donated children books valued at $650 for a total value of $8,650, is just an extension of Robin’s effort to promote literacy.  The donated books will include many of Robin’s favorite children’s books he enjoyed while growing up and many of today’s wonderful children’s books.  All the books will be given to participants of the Summer Challenge.

The Summer Challenge program offers enriching activities that will improve children’s literacy skills and prevent learning loss over the summer months. During the Summer Challenge programs, the Library will give away free books to those who participate in the Summer Challenge with the intent to provide children books to call their own. The Summer Challenge program’s events and prizes are provided at all Library branches.

The donated books were delivered to the Library in May 2018, and the Library received the donation check in the amount of $8,000 in June, 2018. Upon your Board’s approval of the recommended actions, the Library will accept the donations.
