SUBJECT: Salary Resolution Amendment - Deputy Sheriff I - Recruit Classification Re-title

RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):
TITLE
Approve amendment to the Salary Resolution that re-titles the Deputy Sheriff I - Recruit classification to Deputy Sheriff Recruit within Org 3111 while remaining in full combination with the existing Deputy Sheriff group, as reflected in Appendix "D", effective May 2, 2022.
REPORT
There is no net County cost associated with the recommended action. Currently, there are two Deputy Sheriff I classifications within the Sheriff's Office Org 3111, Deputy Sheriff I - Recruit and Deputy Sheriff I - Court Services; the former classification is a non-sworn, provisional position, while the latter is a sworn, permanent position within the county. Both designations as either sworn or non-sworn are defined by California Penal Code 830.1. This re-title will ensure that the Deputy Sheriff Recruit classification exists purely as a provisional position and will provide further clarification to the intent and structure of the Deputy Sheriff series. This item directly affects the Sheriff's Office but has countywide implications.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):

The alternative action is to not approve the recommended action and continue to designate the classification as Deputy Sheriff I - Recruit.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no net County cost associated with the recommended action.

DISCUSSION:

The recommended action would delineate the Deputy Sheriff group into more appropriately named classifications and further designate the Recruit classification as a non-sworn, provisional position per California Penal Code 830.1. This re-title will assist the Sheriff's Office to meet their departmental needs by increasing efficiency in the recruitment and retention of prospective Deputy Sheriffs.
